Origin
Sea to Summit was founded in 1990 in Perth, Australia, by mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape and outdoor expert Roland Tyson. The company's name was directly inspired by Macartney-Snape's historic "Sea to Summit" expedition, during which he became the first person ever to climb Mount Everest starting from sea level.
In the spring of 1990, Tim Macartney-Snape decided that a previous ascent of Mount Everest did not feel 'complete' because he had not started at sea level. He therefore swam in the Bay of Bengal in India and then walked over 1,200 kilometers on foot to the base of Everest, before reaching the summit without supplemental oxygen. For this grueling journey, Macartney-Snape needed extremely lightweight, functional, and reliable equipment. He contacted Roland Tyson, a young outdoor designer from Perth who created innovative gear on his own sewing machine.
Following the success of the expedition, the two men officially decided to join forces in 1990 and start a company named after the iconic journey: Sea to Summit. From day one, the focus was on designing equipment that was lighter, more compact, and more durable than existing alternatives on the market. The headquarters remained located in Perth, a place surrounded by rugged nature, which proved to be the ideal testing environment for their new prototypes. What began with a small sewing machine in Australia quickly grew into an internationally respected brand. Sea to Summit started with lightweight sleeping bags and waterproof dry bags. They later successfully expanded this to award-winning sleeping mats, compact cookware, travel accessories, and tents.

Unique products and applications
Sea to Summit creates products that you won't find with any other brand. For almost every need in the world of an adventurer looking for lightweight gear, the company has designed a solution. Think of packable backpacks, collapsible pots, lightweight towels, and compactly packed soap and detergents.
The Frontier Series
The Sea to Summit Frontier series is the latest generation of premium, ultralight cook sets from Sea to Summit, specifically designed for outdoor chefs who want to do more than just boil water. The series combines the compactness of their previous folding techniques with the durability of professional cookware. Within the Frontier line, Sea to Summit distinguishes between two different systems, both equipped with clever, patented technologies.
These Frontier Ultralight sets are made from a hard-anodized aluminum alloy. This material ensures fast, perfectly even heat distribution and is scratch-resistant. The pots feature a fixed shape.
For those who have even less space in their backpack, there is the Ultralight Collapsible variant. This is the evolution of their well-known X-Series. The sides of the pots in this variant are made of heat-resistant, flexible EU food-grade silicone. The base is still made of hard-anodized aluminum. This means you can safely place it directly on a stove, as long as the flames do not directly touch the silicone edges. After use, you can press the pot or kettle completely flat into a disc less than 5 centimeters thick.
The strength of the Frontier cook sets lies in their modular design. Sea to Summit supplies these sets as 1-person (Solo), 2-person, or even complete 4-person sets. For a better understanding of how these cook sets work, see the following video:
The Pillow Lock system
The Pillow Lock system is a patented and innovative method by Sea to Summit to prevent a Sea to Summit pillow from sliding off the Sea to Summit sleeping mat during the night. It solves a major annoyance for many campers by temporarily anchoring the pillow and the mat together into one stable sleep system. The unique thing about this design is that it can be integrated into the mat as desired and does not use coarse, heavy materials such as traditional buckles, straps, or standard Velcro. This ensures that sleeping comfort is always maintained. Both when you want to use a Sea to Summit pillow and when you do not and want to use your own standard pillow, for example.
The system works via four included fine Velcro patches and the specific outer fabric of the Sea to Summit pillows. These self-adhesive patches feature a high-quality adhesive layer and can be stuck by the camper themselves onto the head end of the inflated sleeping mat. The patches contain tiny plastic micro-hooks that only grip onto the knitted polyester exterior of a Sea to Summit pillow. When you place the inflated pillow on the patches and press lightly, the materials interlock, keeping the pillow firmly in place all night long, while you can easily pull the pillow off the mat again in the morning.
Sustainability
Sea to Summit is actively committed to reducing its ecological footprint and has built its sustainability strategy around responsible materials, CO2 reduction, and product longevity. Because the company was founded by nature lovers, protecting the wilderness is a core value within their business operations. How do they try to achieve this? We list a number of measures below:
- Recycled raw materials: Sea to Summit is increasingly replacing 'new' polyester and nylon with recycled materials in the production of their sleeping bags, dry sacks, and bags.
- More and more textile products carry the independent bluesign quality label, which guarantees that the fabrics are produced with minimal impact on people and the environment and without harmful chemicals.
- For the water-repellent properties of their gear, the brand is completely switching to C0 non-PFC finishes. These are biodegradable and do not pollute the groundwater, unlike traditional PFC chemicals.
- The brand is reducing the use of plastic packaging and is switching to recycled cardboard and paper for their consumer packaging.
- Sea to Summit is a member of the global 1% for the Planet movement, through which they donate a fixed portion of their turnover directly to non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental protection and climate action.
Leave no trace
Sea to Summit has a very close and long-standing relationship with the Leave No Trace organization. Because the brand's founders are experienced mountaineers themselves, they consider education around the principles of Leave No Trace to be a fundamental part of their brand identity. Sea to Summit is an official Silver Partner of the organization. They structurally donate money to fund the foundation's educational programs worldwide. In addition, it designs products that help campers adhere to the principles. Well-known examples include their biodegradable Pocket Soaps, the ultralight Trash Dry Sacks (for carrying waste back airtight), and the special Trowels (lightweight shovels to bury human waste according to guidelines).
