Salomon

Origin

The Salomon company originated in 1947 in the French town of Annecy, in the French Alps. It was founded by François Salomon, along with his wife and son Georges Salomon. Initially, it was a small family business specialising in making wood saw blades and tools for skis.

In the 1950s, Salomon began to focus on ski components, especially ski bindings. In 1957, they developed an innovative binding with a safety system, which put the brand on the international map. In the following decades, Salomon grew into a leading brand in the winter sports world.

In the 1990s, Salomon expanded into other sports, such as trailrunning, hiking and snowboarding. In 1997, the company was acquired by German sports group Adidas, but in 2005 it was sold to Amer Sports, a Finnish company. Since 2019, Amer Sports has been owned by a consortium led by Chinese company Anta Sports.

Today, Salomon is known for its innovative and technically advanced equipment for outdoor sports. It has a very good reputation, especially among outdoor sports enthusiasts such as skiing, trailrunning, hiking and mountaineering. It is considered a top brand within the outdoor world, especially appreciated for its quality, technical performance and innovations.

Speedcross vs. Xa Pro 3D

The Speedcross trail running shoe from Salomon

The Salomon Speedcross is an iconic trail running shoe known for its excellent grip, robust protection and comfortable fit. This shoe is designed for runners who want to venture into technical terrain such as muddy trails, loose ground and mountainous terrain. The first model was launched in 2006, but was not an instant success. Over the years, the shoe gained increasing popularity and Salomon now sells more than 1 million pairs a year! The shoe has a tough but flexible outsole with deep studs that ensure maximum grip, even on smoother surfaces. The Speedcross also has a comfortable fit and a protective construction to protect feet from bumps and shocks while running on uneven terrain. It is a favourite choice among trail runners for its performance in demanding conditions.

Salomon's Xa Pro 3D trail running shoe

The Salomon Xa Pro 3D is an iconic trail running shoe that originated in the early 2000s, after Salomon expanded its focus from winter sports to trail running and outdoor activities. With the Xa Pro 3D, the brand introduced a shoe that combined stability, grip and protection, ideal for technical terrain. The Xa Pro 3D was one of the first models to introduce the 3D Advanced Chassis, a technology that provides stability on rough terrain thanks to a sturdy chassis between the midsole and outsole.

From its launch, the Xa Pro 3D was popular among trail runners and hikers for its durability and versatility. Over the years, Salomon has released several updates, including the V8 and V9 versions, which offer improvements in weight, breathability and comfort, while retaining core qualities.

The difference between the Speedcross and the Xa Pro 3D

The Salomon Speedcross and the Salomon XA Pro 3D are both popular trail running shoes, but they are designed for different types of terrain and user needs. The Speedcross is designed for maximum grip in muddy, soft and loose surfaces. The sole is softer and more flexible, focusing more on comfort and grip than stability. It is therefore less suitable for those who need extra support. The Xa Pro 3D has a flatter sole with less aggressive studs. The sole offers more stability, especially on technical or uneven terrain.

This makes the Speedcross a good choice for fast trail runs on softer surfaces, short to medium distances. For many, the Xa Pro 3D is the better option for longer distances and for trails on mixed or hard terrain.

Sustainability

Salomon is actively committed to sustainability through various initiatives in product development, circular economy, climate strategy and community engagement. Below is an overview of their key actions.

Circular economy and product longevity

Salomon is working to develop new principles, innovations and business models to promote the circular economy. They aim to offer at least one option for repair, recycling, second-hand use or rental for all their products by 2030. In addition, the company works with Green Wolf, a repair company, to extend the life of products and reduce waste. Salomon also works with partners such as CETIA and Carbios to improve the recyclability of products. They have also launched the Trash is Gold project, recycling production waste from ski and snowboard collections.

Salomon Foundation

The Salomon Foundation is an initiative of Salomon, founded in 1999. The foundation focuses on promoting access to outdoor sports for vulnerable groups, especially in mountainous areas. The Foundation aims to help people whose participation in outdoor sports is limited by physical, social or economic barriers. This is achieved by partnering with local non-profit organisations offering programmes for, among other things:

  • Social and professional reintegration of mountain professionals unable to work due to accident or illness.
  • Supporting vulnerable communities by giving them access to outdoor sports activities.
  • Education and awareness about conservation and sustainable handling of the environment.

Salomon employees, including former athletes, actively participate in the foundation's projects. This strengthens links with local communities and emphasises the brand's commitment to the foundation's mission.

The above describes part of Salomon's sustainability policy. Want to know more about it? Then read all about it on Salomon's website: Our Responsible Commitments.
